Just found a mildly interesting stat. The league’s highest scoring offence (Falcons) and the defense which allowed the fewest points (Patriots) will meet in Super bowl LI. This has happened five times before since the merger. They were:
2013 – Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks
1990 – Buffalo Bills and New York Giants
1989 – San Francisco 49’s and Denver Broncos
1984 – Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49’s
1978 – Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers
The best defenses have won four of those games, with the only win for the offences coming when Broadway Joe lit up the Broncos to the tune of 55-10. Some historically great defenses in there too, The Legion of Boom at their peak, Lawrence Taylor in one of his All-Pro years for the Giants, and the Steel Curtain. In fact I would encourage you to go find the America’s Game episode of that Steelers team. It’s great.
